Magnesium Supplements Review by ConsumerLab.com

ConsumerLab.com recently tested magnesium supplements and found significant issues. One popular brand with a GMP seal contained only 45.1% of its listed magnesium. Another product violated FDA labeling rules by displaying a heart symbol without an approved health claim. Several other supplements met their listed amounts, were lead-free, and tablets broke apart properly.

The cost to obtain an equal amount of magnesium ranged from two cents to over $1.30. Forms tested included magnesium aspartate, orotate, citrate, chloride, lactate, lactate dehydrate, and oxide. Products evaluated were tablets, caplets, enteric and time-release pills, capsules, softgels, powders, liquids, and calcium-magnesium supplements. Sales reached $430 million in 2011, up 14% from the prior year and 79% from 2006, per Nutrition Business Journal.

ConsumerLab.com also recently tested saw palmetto supplements for prostate health benefits evidence.
