Rice Protein Matches Whey in Performance and Body Composition Study

A recent study published in Nutrition Journal reveals that rice protein is equally effective as whey protein in enhancing body composition and exercise performance. Conducted by researchers at The University of Tampa, the trial involved 24 resistance-trained college-aged men who consumed 48 g of rice protein (Oryzatein® from Axiom Foods) or whey protein isolate post-exercise on training days.

Participants reported perceived recovery, soreness, and readiness to train, while measurements of muscle thickness, body composition, bench press, and leg press strength were taken at baseline, week four, and week eight. The researchers noted significant improvements over time in lean body mass, muscle mass, strength, and power, along with a decrease in fat mass. No differences were observed between the two protein sources, indicating their comparability.

The trend toward plant-based proteins is growing, with both vegetarian and non-vegetarian consumers increasingly opting for alternatives like rice, pea, and super greens. For further insights into this expanding market, refer to the feature ‘Protein Powers: New Product Innovation.’
